About Alberto Bianchi: Alberto Bianchi did his firstcrush at Newton in 2014; in April 2016, he returned to become Newton’s Winemaker.

Born in Milan, Italy, Alberto’s resume reads like a travelogue of the world’s great winemaking regions, with sojourns in Italy, France, Australia, New Zealand and Argentina. Alberto earned a Bachelor degree in viticulture and enology from the University of Milan, then went on to achieve a double Master degree in the same subjects from the University of Turin and the University of Lisbon.

The basis of Alberto’s Master thesis was the 2011 harvest at Cape Mentelle in Australia’s Margaret River region, where Newton Estate Director Rob Mann was then Winemaker. Alberto partnered with Rob again in 2014 – Rob’s first harvest as Newton Estate Director– when he worked at Newton as part of a three-year multi-winery program.

In 2013, Alberto worked at Terrazas de Los Andes in Argentina. After his stint at Newton, he completed his three-year program at Cloudy Bay Vineyard in New Zealand. He previously held various winemaking positions in Italy’s Piedmont, Tuscany and Campania regions at Viticoltori de Concilis, Marchesi de Frescobaldi and Terre da Vino; at Preignes le Vieux in France’s Languedoc region, and Yealands Estate in Marlborough,New Zealand.

“After all the vineyards and cellars I’ve worked in around the world, to be named Winemaker at an incredible place like Newton is a great outcome,” says Alberto. “The steep Spring Mountain estate requires a lot of hand work, but the sun is never missing in Napa Valley. At Newton there is a huge potential to produce refined, complex quality wines without losing the drinkability factor. It’s a stunning site and I’m very excited to contribute to the new wine styles and to a new chapter in the winery’s impressive history.”

About Newton Winery: Combining savoir-faire, respect for the environment, and exceptional terroir, Newton Vineyard has been producing internationally acclaimed wines for over 35 years.

Founded in 1977, Newton Vineyard is one of the most prestigious estates in California’s Napa Valley. The famous American critic Robert Parker actually devoted an article to it in his reference work The World’s Greatest Wine Estates. Located on the steep slopes of Spring Mountain, the estate, spanning just about 260 hectares, produces wines that are vinified separately then blended together. Each of the 112 parcels is planted with a specific grape variety – merlot, cabernet franc, chardonnay, cabernet sauvignon or petit verdot. With its close relationship to the surrounding nature, the estate alternates vines with wooded areas in order to preserve a vast array of biodiversity throughout the vineyards. In 1990, innovative Newton Vineyard launched Newton Unfiltered Chardonnay, one of the first unfiltered wines produced and sold within the United States, and which has become an international leader.
