The prestigious pinot noir grape has always seduced wine lovers around the world, starting with the allure and fame of the Grands Crus of Burgundy. This capricious but exceptional grape, when understood by those who work on it, offers a variety of expressions and is highly reflective of both terroir and winemaking. Discover the many facets of this fascinating variety by comparing the recent vintages of new world pinots from Chile and California to old world expressions from Hungary and Burgundy.
Featured Producers
Bouchard Père & Fils (Burgundy)
Bouchard Pere & Fils is one of Burgundy’s great names, an icon since its founding in 1731, and with parcels like Bonnes-Mares, Nuits Saint-Georges, Corton and Montrachet, is lucky to be able to make use of some of the region’s great terroirs.
Joseph Drouhin (Burgundy)
With more than 90 different appellations, Joseph Drouhin offers a fascinating array of Burgundy terroirs making everything from simple, village-level cuvees to highly regarded grand crus and premier crus wines from pinot noir and chardonnay. For the last 140 years the estate has been in the hands of the Drouhin family, and with the fourth generation at the helm, the estate adopted a biological and biodynamic approach for its wines more than 20 years ago.
Sauska (Hungary)
Under the philosophy of using only the power of gravity and ambient yeasts to craft their wines, Sauska grows both indigenous and international grape varieties in Tokaj (Northeast of Hungary) and Villany (Southwest of Hungary). The acclaimed oenologist and agronomist Stefano Chioccioli — Sauska’s consultant since 2009 — runs a complete gamut: white and red, still and sparkling, dry and sweet. Their single-varietal wines made from international varietals — such as pinot noir, merlot and chardonnay — are truly exciting. Give these lovely Hungarian wines a try.
Martin Ray (USA)
Having established a quality artisanal wine under his Martin Ray brand, Courtney Benham established his namesake wines to further explore the terroirs available in California. From high elevation mountain appellations, to benchland vineyards and sun-drenched valley sites, Benham always produces wines that are polished, expressive and hugely drinkable.
Errázuriz (Chile)
Producing some of the finest Chilean wines, Errazuriz is among the Aconcagua Valley’s most venerable producers confirming Chile as a world-class appellation. The winery was founded by Don Maximiano Errazuriz in 1870, giving it almost 150 years of rich history. Today, Eduardo Chadwick — a fifth-generation family member — manages the estate.
Silver Heights (China)
Silver Heights from China’s Ningxia region is a family-run business, and with the talented Emma Gao as winemaker, it was among the wineries that won early praise as China’s wine industry began its rapid rise. It continues to make classy cabernet blends and round but drinkable chardonnays, as well as good pinot noir and marselan. The wines always possess a well-judged balance between richness and freshness, and it recently converted to biodynamic farming.
