If the 2015 vintage in Tuscany was one of superlatives and revelations, 2016 was that of confirmation and finesse. More balanced and fresh, the 2016 vintage reinforced the momentum created a year earlier, from Chianti and Tuscan wines to Brunello di Montalcino. Come and discover the exceptional Brunello di Montalcino from Giodo, Luce, Frescobaldi and Renieri, as well as the Tuscan Redigaffi from Tua Rita and taste these superlative wines all in one go!
Featured Producers
Frescobaldi
The Frescobaldi family has been making wines for 700 years, yet it is their more recent endeavors that are destined for the history books. The family’s best wines come from an array of appellations in Tuscany, from Chianti to Brunello di Montalcino. From their ancestral home, the Frescobaldis can sit back and reflect on the diversity of Tuscan wine as evidenced by their six estates, Nipozzano, CastelGiocondo, Pomino, Ammiraglia, Castiglioni and Remole.
Giodo
Giodo is a small-scale personal project from the great Tuscan enologist Carlo Ferrini, and one of Brunello’s most impressive wines, considering its limited output. Producing only around 1,000 cases a year, Ferrini manages to get incredible finesse and depth from his wines here. Cherry and floral aromas abound, the 2010, 2015 and now the 2016 Giodo Brunello di Montalcino wines all scored 100 points!
Renieri
Marco Bacci of respected Chianti Classico estate Castello di Bossi bought this gorgeous Brunello vineyard in the late 1990s. However, it is only now that the Renieri vines have reached a good age to yield superlative grapes and the wines are coming into their own. The Brunellos di Montalcino have been excellent since the 2006 vintage. They show fabulous depth and fruit yet remain polished. They already garnered the second spot in James’s list of the best Italian wines and top scores. This is a red-hot estate in Tuscany to watch.
Tenuta Luce
The Tuscan estate of Tenuta Luce is located in the hills of southern Montalcino. Originally, in the mid-1990s, it was a joint venture between the Florentine Frescobaldi family and California’s winemaking Mondavi clan, but it is now wholly owned by the Frescobaldis. The wines are going from strength to strength. Their phenomenal Brunellos are not to be missed.
Tua Rita
Val di Cornia coastal winery Tua Rita built a global reputation on its fabulously rich merlot Redigaffi, which stole the Tuscan limelight in the early 1990s and became the darling of collectors. James awarded the 1997 Redigaffi a 100-point score, as did critics across the board; the 2015 was perfection, another 100-pointer and James’s choice of 2017 Italian Wine of the Year. Stefano Frascolla, who runs the estate with his wife, Simena, daughter of founders Virgilio and Rita Tua, is fastidiously dedicated to quality, always striving to make the best wine possible in every vintage across the entire range.
