These two legendary names in Piemonte make great Barolos that can be aged for decades. Contrast the iconic wines of the recently late Pio Boffa, a visionary fourth-generation winemaker, with the extreme low-yield wines of Roberto, who began in the 1980s.

About the Producers

Roberto Voerzio

Having crafted more 100-point wines than any other Italian winemaker, Roberto Voerzio is a living benchmark in fine winemaking. He works with dedication and exactitude in the fields and it shows. Voerzio’s single-vineyard Barolos in the heart of the Langhe are some of the most profound reds in the world, showing the incredible depth of fruit and structure. With son Davide on the team at the family’s La Morra estate, there is no stopping Voerzio in making some of the greatest wines on Earth.

Pio Cesare

Founded in 1881, Pio Cesare’s vineyards and ancient cellars have enjoyed success for five generations. The Boffa family – Rosy Pio, granddaughter of Cesare, married Giuseppe Boffa in 1940 – has probably done more to promote Barolo around the world than anyone else. There seems to be at least one family member traveling the globe at any one time to nurture the prestige of Barolo. Pio Cesare wines are crafted to be accessible and difficult to resist drinking young, but they are very age-worthy, too. James finds vintages from the 1960s and 1970s still superb now.
