Chile stands out for consistently producing great wines in different vintages, whether with blends or single grape varieties. Their ability to take the edge off vintage variations has allowed the Chile’s icons to strengthen their reputation, while complementing the country’s diversity of styles. We have selected wines that excelled in the 2016, 2017 and 2018 vintages – including four100-point perfect-scoring wines – from diverse regions to showcase unwavering excellence across different styles and blends.
Featured Producers
Almaviva
Almaviva is the name both of the winery and of the sole wine produced here, and is considered one of Chile’s greatest wine names. A joint venture between Château Mouton-Rothschild and Concha y Toro dating back to 1997, Almaviva marries first-growth expertise and Chilean soils in a cabernet-based blend. James scored both the 2015 and 2017 Almaviva a maximum 100 points, with the former winning the number one spot in our Top 100 Wines of 2017.
Baron Philippe de Rothschild Chile
Just as her father created Opus One in 1979, Baroness Philippine de Rothschild believe in the potential of Chile and decided to create her own company in 1997, Baron Philippe de Rothschild Chile. In 1999, the wine Escudo Rojo was released. Its roots in Chile are now confirmed by its ownership of 1,020 hectares of vines in the Maipo and Maule valleys, cultivated in the purest Bordeaux tradition and with the know-how to express the quintessence of Chilean terroir.
Clos Apalta, Lapostolle
Founded in 1997, Clos Apalta has produced three 100-point wines in recent vintages. Owned by Charles de Bournet Marnier Lapostolle, the estate was established in the Apalta Valley after years of searching for the perfect New World terroir. With Michel Rolland on board as a consultant, Clos Apalta continues to impress us with its age-worthy reds.
Seña
As Chile’s first icon wine, Sena is a unique Bordeaux blend made from biodynamically grown grapes in the Aconcagua Valley. The winery was originally founded by Eduardo Chadwick in cooperation with the late American wine icon Robert Mondavi. Sena was awarded 100 points (for the second time) and ranked third in our Top 100 Wines of the Year of 2017.
Viñedo Chadwick
Sena’s Eduardo Chadwick also heads Vinedo Chadwick, one of the great small single-vineyard wines of the Andes that scored a perfect 100 points for its 2014 and 2017 wines. Together, Sena and Vinedo Chadwick represent the best of Chile’s wines and are traded around the world like Bordeaux first growths.
VIK
Founded in 2006 by Norwegian entrepreneur Alexander Vik, this impressive, futuristic winery. Located in the magnificent Valle de Millahue in Cachapoal, the winery approaches winemaking with a holistic vision and a vineyard-to-bottle philosophy. Its top wine, the namesake VIK, is a blend of cabernet sauvignon, carmenere, syrah, merlot and cabernet franc, and looks to be an iconic wine in the making.
