The newly released 2017 vintage is showing potential and quality, confirming a great trilogy in Barolo. 2015 started the series with an exceptional vintage, the best since 2010, followed by the marvelous 2016 that brought wines with great drinkability even when young. 2017 was a hot vintage in Europe because of a heatwave, but top producers in Barolo were capable of delivering rich yet refined wines. Join us for a masterclass covering these three vintages from two iconic producers.
Featured Producers
Gianni Gagliardo
Under the watchful eye of patriarch Gianni, Poderi Gianni Gagliardo makes focused, precise wines – particularly, single-vineyard Barolos – in the Langhe. Gianni started making wines back in the 1970s, however, it wasn’t until the 1980s that his wines came into their own. Today, the winemaking responsibilities are in the hands of his three sons: Stefano, Alberto and Paolo. The winery owns many small plots of land that are all distributed in five different villages with varying soil compositions. We especially like the younger wines here but don’t miss their special Barolos that are released after an extended aging in bottle (Archivio Storico): they show the wonder in aged Barolos.
Poderi Aldo Conterno
This is one of the most impressive wine estates in all of Italy, perhaps in the world. From its great vineyards in Barolo, Poderi Aldo Conterno makes some of the most exquisite red wines on the planet. It was all part of the dream of the late Aldo Conterno, who passed away in the spring of 2012. He established the estate in 1969, having left his father’s winery, Giacomo Conterno, in the hands of his brother. Poderi Aldo Conterno is now under the helm of Aldo’s sons: Franco, Stefano and Giacomo. Conterno’s three Barolo vineyards (Cicala, Colonnello and Romirasco) are all in Bussia. The Granbussia is an uber-blend of the best fruit from all three sites; released eight years following the given harvest. James chose the 2008 his Italian Wine of the Year in 2016.
