2011 was a hot vintage for Tuscany, with many wineries harvesting early to retain freshness. Discover how some of the top wines have developed and are drinking ten years on. This masterclass will feature some of Tuscany’s most iconic names, including Bibi Graetz, Antinori, Mazzei and Petrolo.
Featured Producers
Bibi Graetz
In two decades since his first vintage release, Bibi Graetz has become one of the brightest lights in Tuscan winemaking. Graetz draws on old vines, which give his best reds depth and soul.
Marchesi Antinori
What would the wine world be like without the Antinori family? The patriarch of the clan, Piero Antinori, forever changed the way the world views Tuscan wines with the creation in the 1970s of Tignanello, followed by Solaia. Many of Antinori’s wines maintain a loyal following among collectors around the world. The sleek, structured wines of Guado al Tasso represent Antinori’s continued connection to Tuscany’s Bolgheri.
Mazzei
The current generation is writing today’s history books at one of the oldest and most prestigious names in Tuscan winemaking. The Mazzei family’s primary holding, since 1435 no less, is Castello di Fonterutoli, near Siena. Today, the ultra tech-savvy winery, designed by Agnese Mazzei, is a real showpiece, enabling the winemakers to fine-tune the likes of the legendary Siepi, which James has been enjoying here since the late 1980s.
Petrolo
Artist Luca Sanjust gave up his studio in Rome in the mid-1990s in favor of a small estate in the hills of Tuscany, 50 kilometers southeast of Florence. Leaving his paintings behind, Sanjust began making precise, heartfelt wines at Petrolo. Today, his pure merlot, Galatrona, is among the region’s coveted wines. Galatrona reflects Tuscany’s distinctive style of merlot, very different from Bordeaux or anywhere else.
