Another great vintage following on from 2006, 2007 Brunellos stood out for their juicy, bright and ripe fruit character, promising immense drinkability. Try for yourself how they are currently drinking with some of the best bottles directly from the wineries’ cellars.
Featured Producers
Biondi-Santi
Biondi-Santi is a legend. The family essentially created Brunello di Montalcino in the late 19th century. Some of the greatest Italian wines of James’ life include Biondi-Santi Brunello di Montalcino – particularly the 1955 and 1975 Riserva. The Biondi-Santi Brunello has always shown a special style, a firm backbone of tannins and acidity with an elegant fruit balance.
Castiglion del Bosco
This luxury destination – the dream of Massimo Ferragamo of the famous Tuscan fashion family – in the hills of the Brunello di Montalcino region has boosted tourism in central Italy. Castiglion del Bosco, however, was making excellent Brunellos long before the hotel, spa and private golf club were built. The single-vineyard Campo del Drago is rich and powerful.
Ciacci Piccolomini d’Aragona
This historic property, built by a 17th-century bishop of Montalcino, has been crafting balanced, precise, beautiful reds since the 1980s. Recent vintages of the estate show the most focus and intensity, though. Paolo and Lucia Bianchini, whose father Giuseppe was bequeathed Ciacci Piccolomini d’Aragona by its noble owners, primarily make two Brunellos: a regular bottling and a single-vineyard wine.
Eredi Fuligni
Back in the 1980s, James had already fallen in love with the Brunellos di Montalcino that Eredi Fuligni produces when the 1988 vintage first caught his attention. Situated on the northern slope of Montalcino, this small winery makes wines with incredible finesse and intensity. The wines here show perfect balance and exquisite complexity.
Tony Sasa
Tony Sasa not only owns one of Florence’s fine-wine destinations, he also produces an array of wines, including a wonderful Brunello di Montalcino called Puro and Martina. Sasa began making Brunello in the early 2000s after leasing a few hectares of vineyards in the southern part of the appellation a few years before. He makes the wine with esteemed consulting enologist Paolo Caciorgna, who is a keen proponent of biodynamically grown grapes.
Validcava
There is something almost mystical about the Brunello di Montalcino from the wonderful estate of Valdicava. The mystique must emanate from the sublime vineyards on the north side of Montalcino and, of course, the guru-like dedication of owner Vincenzo Abbruzzese, who hired the dream team of winemaker Attilio Pagli and agronomist Andrea Paoletti to enhance the property.
