Veneto is famous for its beautiful and picturesque city of Venice as well as its powerful and iconic Amarone della Valpolicella wines. This special style of wine is based on local grapes corvina, corvinone, rondinella and molinara, and delivers wines with concentration and character. Complex and full-bodied, they offer a variety of aromas and textures that satisfy many wine lovers. Another wine that deserves attention is Ripasso della Valpolicella, produced from skin maceration with partially fermented grapes used to produced the Amarone. This masterclass will feature both styles through five top producers of the appellation: Allegrini, Monte del Frà, Prà, Speri and Tedeschi.

Allegrini

The Allegrini Amarones are benchmarks for the region, refined and harmonious with a lovely balance of fabulous fruit and bright acidity. There is nothing overdone about them and they always impress with their structure and drinkability.

Balerìn

It’s hard to think of a couple that has done more to promote, market and sell fine Italian wines around the world, particularly in the US and now Asia, than Neil and Maria Empson. The Empsons have exported more great bottles of Italian wine in the past four decades than just about anyone else out there. They also produce their own wines. Balerin is a great fine wine made with finesse.

Monte del Frà

The heart of Monte del Fra is located in the village of Custoza, above Lake Garda, only seven miles (15 kilometres) from Verona. Its roots date back to 1492. The vineyards are planted in guyot style in the areas of Custoza, Bardolino and Lugana and with the classic pergola system in Valpolicella Classico.

Prà

Soave is lucky to have a winery like Pra. A truly great winemaker and a gentleman farmer, Graziano Pra knows the great crus of Soave Classico like the back of his hand. More recently, the winery began making red wine, too, and its Amarones and Valpolicellas have only enhanced its reputation.

Speri

The Speri family has been making wine in the Valpolicella Classica region, near the historic city of Verona, for seven generations. In the late 1950s Speri was one of the first estates to market Amarone della Valpolicella. Today, three generations of the family work together to manage the estate and, starting from 2004, they undertook the long process of conversion to organic farming, receiving their certification in 2015.

Tedeschi

The Tedeschi family has a rich history in wine going back almost four centuries. Their dedication and passion for the Valpolicella region is unmatched, and the Amarones produced are fragrant, full and juicy.
