Join this special wine tasting masterclass and roundtable conversation hosted and presented by the JamesSuckling.com tasting team.
This masterclass will focus on the organic and biodynamic philosophies in grape growing and winemaking. Of increasing interest in Italy is the aim to produce more transparent wines that reflect the land and nature. If organic certification limits the use of synthetic products in the vineyards, biodynamism takes this approach further. Developed by Rudolf Steiner, it focuses on strengthening the vines and the ecosystem, by dynamizing the soils, the vineyards and working in harmony with nature’s cycles. Join us to taste and learn more about how organic and biodynamic wines are not necessarily unconventional, but instead display heightened energy, vivacity and purity.

Brancaia
With a devotion to quality, enterprising Swiss couple Brigitte and Bruno Widmer acquired the Brancaia estate in Castellina, Chianti, in the early 1980s. Their Chianti Classico and accompanying Riserva enjoy a strong following. Among the estate’s top labels is Il Blu which is a soft yet powerful blend of merlot and sangiovese farmed in the communes of Radda and Castellina.
Mirafiore
Here’s a winery that was founded by actual royalty. King Vittorio Emanuele II’s son, Count Emanuele Alberto di Mirafiore, founded Mirafiore in 1878. Fast forward nearly 150 years, and under the leadership of Oscar Farinetti, founder of the Italian gourmet food chain Eataly.
Piccini 1882
From a mere 17.3 acres (seven hectares) of Tuscan vineyards purchased by great-grandfather, Angelo Piccini in 1882, the Piccini family are today big players in the world of Italian wine, with four estates in historic wine areas of Tuscany, as well as estates in the south of Italy and Sicily.
Querciabella
Three decades of organic viticulture make Querciabella a model of excellence among fine wine producers committed to working in balance with nature. Today the estate’s vision, guided by international vegan investor and entrepreneur Sebastiano Cossia Castiglioni, is embodied in a unique 100% plant-based production methodology, which excludes the use of animal products from vineyard to bottle.
San Polino
Luigi Fabbro and Katia Nussbaum have created a tiny nirvana for the production of Brunello di Montalcino at San Polino. Almost five hectares of Brunello vineyards are biodynamically farmed, and the energetic couple hand make everything, from their classic Brunello to the sensational Helichrysum.
Petrolo
Artist Luca Sanjust gave up his studio in Rome in the mid-1990s in favor of a small estate in the hills of Tuscany, 50 kilometers southeast of Florence. Leaving his paintings behind, Sanjust began making precise, heartfelt wines at Petrolo. Everything this artist-turned-winemaker does seems to be a work of art.
Valdicava
There is something almost mystical about the Brunello di Montalcino from the wonderful estate of Valdicava. The mystique must emanate from the sublime vineyards on the north side of Montalcino, where the sangiovese grapes are exquisite, and, of course, the guru-like dedication of owner Vincenzo Abbruzzese.
