With a stunning mountainous landscape in Northern Italy, Alto Adige is also one of the most challenging places to grow grapes in the world with its steep hillside vineyards. Here, surrounded by the Alps and the Dolomites on three sides, a variety of both indigenous and international varieties are grown, making vibrant, fresh yet intense wines. Four iconic producers will be presented: Cantina Terlan, Nals Margreid, St-Michael-Eppan and Franz Haas. Try unique expressions of Pinot Grigio and Pino Nero, as well as top-quality white blends, and an intense, spicy Lagrein. Don’t miss the chance to taste a stunning, 15-year-old pinot bianco too.

Cantina Terlan
Established in 1893, Cantina Terlan is one of the leading wine cooperatives in Alto Adige. Some 140 growers cultivate 190 hectares of vineyards located around the village of Terlano, an area which has earned its own DOC. Terlan is best known for its whites; minerality and freshness along with lush spiciness makes these whites stand apart, while the reds, which make up about 30% of production, regularly show soft, melted tannins and complex layers. Mountain-fruit character here all the way through.
Franz Haas
Passed down for more than seven generations, Franz Haas is an impressive winery hewn out of the sheer rock face at the base of the Dolomites. The estate’s 55 hectares of land under vine cover an eye-catching spectrum of altitudes and soils featuring porphyric sand, clay and limestone. The newest plot rests 1,150 meters above sea level – one of the highest vineyards in Europe. The expertly made pinot nero from this “wine heaven” is expressive and flavorful. While the pinots are undoubtedly Franz Haas’s calling card, the crisp, bright whites are equally impressive.
Nals Margreid
In a matter of decades, the colorful personality of managing director Gottfried Pollinger, combined with the energy and enthusiasm of talented winemaker Harald Schraffl, has invigorated and transformed a local cooperative in Alto Adige into one of Italy’s leading wine producers. Nals Margreid vineyards are found in 14 wine-growing areas (covering 160 hectares) located along the South Tyrolean Wine Route, from Nalles in the north to Magre in the south. The winery’s historic headquarters, renovated in 2019 with new tasting rooms and a wine shop for visitors, sets the tone for a new era in a winemaking tradition that began in 1764.
St. Michael-Eppan
Founded in 1907, the winery of St. Michael-Eppan stands tall and proud. With its 330 families of growers supplying grapes from more than 380 hectares of vineyards around Eppan, in southern Alto Adige, it is undoubtedly one of the best cooperatives in Italy, if not the world. Chief winemaker Hans Terzer is convinced that the whole can be greater than the sum of its parts. The blends here are super-exciting and the many other exciting whites, along with the reds, are well worth seeking out.
