2015 and 2016 were two great vintages in Tuscany. The 2015 grape growing season was hotter with less difference between the heat of the day and the coolness of the night, producing rich, fruity and even some exotic wines. In 2016, there was greater diurnal temperature variation, allowing grapes to retain higher acidity, resulting in wines with greater structure, less opulence and rewarding longer cellaring. Come and taste five Super Tuscans from Argentiera, Campo alla Sughera, Grattamacco, Podere Sapaio and Ornellaia.

Argentiera

Tenuta Argentiera is located in the southern tip of the Bolgheri DOC, on the hills of Donoratico, where beautiful vineyards stretch to the horizon of the Tuscan archipelago. Led by owner Stanislaus Turnauer and with the winemaking managed by Nicolo Carrara, these wines, fed by the coastal sun and rich terroir of the region, are velvety, structured and will stand the test of time.

Campo alla Sughera

Campo alla Sughera was founded in 1998 by the Knauf family from Germany, and has grown into one of the best expressions of the Bolgheri soul. In 2017 the estate started its collaboration with world famous winemaker Stephane Derenoncourt, and the wines have become more elegant and finessed since. The result is classy wines that are often powerful, sometimes explosive, and always balanced and pure.

Ornellaia

If Italy had a classification system similar to Bordeaux, Ornellaia would be a first growth. Located in the coastal region of Bolgheri, Bordeaux blend Ornellaia is a modern legend in Tuscan winemaking. A jewel of the Frescobaldi family estates, Ornellaia makes wines that are not only among the best of Italy, but also some of the most collectible and sought after in the world.

Podere Sapaio

Established in 1999, Podere Sapaio is a relatively new estate located in the legendary coastal region of Bolgheri. It quickly made a name for itself for producing modern, fruit-forward yet structured reds. When James tasted the first vintage, 2004, with one of Italy’s most famous winemakers, he was both blown away by the quality and pleasantly surprised by the value for money it offered.

Grattamacco

Since the late 1990s, James has believed in the quality of the Montecucco area, a short distance from Montalcino in Tuscany. Yet, it took the brother-and-sister team of Claudio and Maria Iris Tipa at ColleMassari to deliver upon that obvious potential. The estate’s recent vintages, all produced from organically grown grapes, show a marvelous softness and finesse.

Orma

Fashion mogul Antonio Moretti Cuseri had a reputation for quality winemaking with Oreno in Valdarno when he set his sights on the Tuscan coastal area of Bolgheri. The vineyards of Orma are found in the heart of a region long-famed for great wines such as Sassicaia, Ornellaia and Le Macchiole (Messorio). Recent vintages have been genuine wow wines, showing finesse and excellent quality.
